18 hour video of world's longest play

From a publicity note sent to the Institute.

Ken Campbell's legendary 1979 I.C.A. production of the world's longest play 'The Warp' by Neil Oram, is now available on six three hour video tapes.

It is the true, mind-boggling, hilarious, macabre tale of one man's battle with the de-human-eyes-ing, robot-eyes-ing, anti-freedom force ...

It stars Russel Denton, Jim Broadbent, Bill Nighy, Maria Moustaka, Stephan Williams, Pat Donovan and the Warp Band.

The complete 18 hour video set costs £105 including postage etc from: Neil Oram, Goshem, Drumnadrochit, Inverness-shire, IV3 6XH (tel 0145 62402).

In recent appearances, Ken Campbell has been talking of beating his own record in a rather spectacular fashion. Inspired by the thought that shows with epic scale and running time are probably more fun for the cast than the sore-bottomed audiences who sit through them, Campbell hatched initial plans for a millennium show which would be his own adaptation of the 1,000 page allegory about language and American trash culture, Infinite Jest.

The production would run for one performance only, over a full seven days in the run-up to the century's end. Not many would wish to sit through a show of those proportions, and Campbell anticipates an audience of maybe one or two. The cast, by contrast, would be of 999 people. The show could not be expected to cover its own costs, so performers would actually pay - probably about £100 each - to join the production. The subscription fee would replace the conventional audition process as the means of deciding who joined the cast.

At present, Campbell is heavily involved with his campaign to promote Pidgin English as an easy-to-learn alternative to Esperanto. (He reckons it takes no more than 3 hours to master.) The campaign will be spearheaded by a Pidgin production of Macbeth.
